Course: FIT1000 - Introduction to Computers
Credits: 4.5 quarter hours

Attendance Policy:
There are three (3) hours (2 days) of unexcused absences without penalty allowed per trimester. Additional absences may result in a reduction of the final grade or withdrawal from the course with a WF. For each day you attend on time you will earn a credit, these credits can be "cashed" in for exam or quiz retakes. This will be explained to you further in class.

Hat Policy:
As provided by the Student Handbook (p. 66), the wearing of hats is prohibited, such that no hat is to be worn in the academic classroom or computer lab while class is scheduled to be in session.

Electronic Devices In Class Policy:
Cellular phones, pagers, CD players, radios, and similar devices must be switched to vibrate or be off, in the academic classroom and computer laboratory facilities while class is scheduled to be in session. "Texting" or "IM"-ing is not allowed in class.

JWU Email:
You are expected to log into the JWU email system to check your email and download materials as required. If you cannot access the email system, call the University Helpdesk at (866) 598-HELP (toll free). Inability to access JWU Email will not be accepted as an excuse for incomplete or late assignments.

Course Participation:
Course participation consists of participation and conscientious effort to learn the subject matter. Conscientiousness is demonstrated by the completeness and thoughtfulness of assignments turned in and the student's preparedness for class. Credit is given for effort to learn, not necessarily for getting the "right answer." Students may earn course participation credit by turning in thoughtful and complete assignments, doing the reading, and through class participation.

A student may earn class participation credit by asking meaningful questions or by making significant comments during a lecture or discussion of topics. A student who is obviously unprepared for class or is inattentive in class will lose class participation points.

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT:
Johnson & Wales University is committed to the Outcomes Assessment initiative. All faculty and students are, therefore, part of an ongoing study to determine and refine the effectiveness of instruction and learning. Names of individual students will not be used when reporting results.

CHEATING POLICY (PLAGIARISM):
Students are expected to uphold the school's standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be that of the student's own work. Students shall be guilty of violating the honor code if they:

1. Represent the work of others as their own.
2. Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work.
3. Give unauthorized assistance to other students.
4. Modify, without instructor approval, an examination, paper, record, or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit.
5. Misrepresent the content of submitted work.

The penalty for violating the honor code is severe. Any student violating the honor code is subject to receive a failing grade for the course and will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs. If a student is unclear about whether a particular situation may constitute an honor code violation, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss the situation.

For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. Such collaboration constitutes cheating. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another's work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own. If you need help on an assignment, contact your instructor, not other classmates.
