complex algebra, equations of degree higher than two, graphs of the trigonometric
functions, trigonometric identities, analytic geometry, and topics in advanced
algebra.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to correctly perform operations with complex numbers and to correctly employ the same in solving higher-degree equations on both examinations and in assigned work.
2. Students will be able to correctly perform operations with trigonometric identities, and to correctly graph trigonometric functions on both examinations and in assigned work.
3. Students will be able to solve problems in plane analytic geometry on both examinations and in assigned work.
4. Students will be able to correctly solve problems involving sequences, exponentiation, logarithms, and the binomial theorem on both examinations and in assigned work.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Your grade for this course will be based on the following:
MAKE-UP EXAMS:
Make-up exams are not allowed! If a student is absent on one scheduled in-class-exam day, the final exam grade will be doubled. If a student is absent on more than one scheduled in-class exam day, the missed exam(s) will be calculated as a zero (0) toward the final average. According to JWU policy, all students must take the final exam on the scheduled final exam day.
ATTENDANCE & CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR POLICY:
A maximum of five (5) absences will be allowed; 6th absence = W.
NOTE: There are no excused absences.
Attendance is taken each day during the first five minutes of class. Students will not be allowed to enter the class more than ten minutes after the start of class. Note: Excessive tardiness (less than 10 minutes late) may also result in an absence.
Departure from class, without prior approval, before the class is dismissed will be counted as an absence.
Students interrupting the teaching/learning process of the class by displaying inappropriate activity (such as sleeping; reading a newspaper or other unrelated material; talking while I am, or anyone else is, talking; or, any rude and/or immature behavior) will be asked to leave the room immediately. This will result in an absence for the day. This person must see me during office hours within two class days to be considered for re-admission, else that person will be dropped from class with a punitive grade of "W".
Students are expected to be prepared for class each day by having their math textbook, notebook, homework, pencil and/or pen. Students are also responsible for bringing in a #2 pencil and scratch paper when exam answers are to marked on scantron forms.
REQUIRED TEXT:
Basic Technical MAthematics, Allyn J. Washington; 7th Edition; Addison Wesley Longman, Inc., 2000.
RECOMMENDED:
A graphing calculator is STRONGLY recommended. The TI-83 will be used for instruction.
OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT:
Johnson and Wales University is committed to the Outcomes Assessment initiative. All faculty and students are, therefore, part of an on-going study to determine and refine the effectiveness of instruction and learning. Names of individual students will not be used when reporting results.
If students require note-taking, test-taking, or any other accommodation, they are required to see their instructor.
