November 2002Esmond D. Smith, Jr., Ph.D.
Professor Smith is a member of the faculty at the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI where he teaches in the Global Enterprise Leadership MBA program. He served as the Director of the International Business Program from 1996-1997 and was voted Graduate School Teacher of the Year in 1998. In the spring of 1999 and 2000, he led a group of graduate students on a three-week long program of study in Singapore and Hong Kong which focuses on the East Asian business environment.. In 2002, he developed and led a graduate program on Business in China which included a two week segment in Beijing. Another such program is being planned for May 2003. Dr. Smith is also an adjunct professor in Salve Regina’s Graduate Extension Studies program, teaching courses on East Asia and Contemporary International Issues. An active member of the World Trade Center Association, he has also been a frequent guest speaker at the Rhode Island Export Assistant Center on the topic of Cultural Issues in International Business.
Dr. Smith retired from the U. S. Navy in October 1991 with the rank of Captain, completing nearly 30 years of active Naval service. His last five years of active duty were spent on the faculty of the Naval War College where he taught courses on intelligence and joint military operations. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University. He has written widely on Chinese maritime affairs and his doctoral dissertation was entitled, "China, Technology and the Spratly Islands: The Geopolitical Impact of New Technologies." During his Naval career, Dr. Smith served on several ships, from ocean minesweepers to cruisers, as a naval attache in Taiwan (Republic of China), and in a wide variety of staff and command assignments during his naval career.
An avid sailor, Dr. Smith and his wife Nanci spend their summers cruising New England waters in their 35 foot ketch, TAI PING. He is a past Commodore and an active member of the Coaster’s Harbor Navy Yacht Club in Newport and also belongs to the New York Yacht Club. Professional memberships include the Naval War College Foundation, the Academy of International Business, and the World Trade Center Association of New England. He co-authored an article entitled "Doing Business in Vietnam: A Cultural Primer", which was published in Indiana University’s Business Horizons and was subsequently selected for inclusion in the 97/98 and 98/99 editions of Annual Editions International Business. He is currently working on an article about student perceptions of business ethics.
